Fair Trade

Maya honey takes its name from the Maya people who descend from the pre-Colombian civilisation established in South Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The honey is imported to Europe and sold by Maya Fair Trade scrlfs (click here to visit the website www.maya-ft.be).

‘Fair Trade’ ensures that the right price is paid, a guaranteed deposit, and also helps to maintain a secure business relationship. Maya Fair Trade scrlfs signs three year purchase agreements, in compliance with Fair Trade standards. Our suppliers and bee-keeping organisations are currently located in Mexico and Guatemala and this will extend to other countries in the future. Maya Fair Trade ensures that on site, regular quality control checks are carried out on its honey.

As well as securing a fair price for the honey, Maya Fair Trade pays its bee-keeping organisations a bonus of $150 per tonne. This provides financial support for Miel Maya Honing’s projects amounting to an annual figure of about €50,000.

One of Miel Maya Honing’s goals is to encourage the use of Fair Trade products, as this shows solidarity for fellow citizens. In buying Fair Trade, the consumer contributes to sustainable development and adheres to values which are beneficial to all parties involved. A fair and mutually respectful relationship between producers in the southern hemisphere and consumers in the northern hemisphere.
